World Health Organization Sounds Alert Over Critical Lack of Weight-Loss Injections

Less than 10% of people that would benefit from weight-loss injections including Wegovy have access to them, caution the global health agency as it publishes its first advice on the medications.

Given in excess of 1,000,000,000 people worldwide now obese, it is calling for increased and just access to this class of drugs.

Per forecasts, in excess of 2,000,000,000 are projected to be obese by 2030 without intervention.

"The new guidelines affirms that excess weight is a chronic disease that can be addressed with comprehensive and ongoing care," remarked its chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Significant expense, limited production capacity, and logistical bottlenecks are key obstacles to widespread availability to the jabs that can assist patients in reducing considerable weight, notes the organization.

GLP-1 Therapy Scarcity

Even in the current best projected case, the supply of GLP-1 therapies would only suffice for about 100 million people – less than 10% of those who need them, according to the health organization.

The guideline urges governments and firms to widen availability, via strategies such as licensing agreements.

Exclusive production rights on semaglutide – the primary component of the drug Wegovy – is due to expire in several countries in 2026.

The Way Obesity Jabs Function

GLP-1 drugs mimick a body's own hormone to delay gastric emptying, reduce hunger and enhance feelings of fullness so individuals reduce food intake.

Individuals commonly start to lose weight after several weeks of beginning the regular doses.

Studies indicates patients may put most of the weight back on after a year of halting the drug, when their normal appetite come back.

To be overweight or obese increases your likelihood for experiencing medical conditions, like diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and some cancers.

Obesity affects individuals in every country and was linked to 3.7 million fatalities worldwide in 2024, per the WHO.
