The Himalayan nation's Electoral Landscape Sees Major Partnership Forged By Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a significant move ahead of the upcoming national polls, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the wake of large-scale and deadly young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Address Young People's Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which led to considerable loss of life.

"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.

The late summer uprising was sparked by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding accusations of systemic political corruption.

Terms of the New Electoral Partnership

According to the official pact, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the country's established political leadership. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Wider Political Consultations Taking Place

In a related development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held meetings with a number of major political figures. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the uprising.

After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a collective responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and open atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
