Individuals Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Medications Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

New research indicates that patients who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds far faster than those who halt conventional lifestyle regimens.

Research printed in a leading health publication shows that while overweight individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Individuals purchasing these drugs need to be aware of the potential of quick weight regain when the therapy ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a return to starting mass within about a year and a half.

Weighing Treatments

The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

The team point out that individuals who shed pounds through dieting generally experience a more gradual weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the heightened regain.

The injections mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this medication means appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."

A Chronic Issue?

Health authorities advise the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the therapy might need to be ongoing.

This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the persistent character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Testimonies

Users who have stopped the jabs report a sudden return of appetite.

"It was like something flipping and you become extremely hungry," said a patient.

This difficulty is compounded if patients have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Widespread Use

Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Adoption is higher among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing behavioural management.
