Fed Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Financial Instability

The United States central bank lowered borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second rate cut this year amid financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve

The move to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the release notes. “Inflation has risen and stays moderately high.”

Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.

Information Shortage Impacts Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve typically analyzes BLS data to assess employment trends, such as the count of new jobs created to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in the previous month.

The figure of jobs added to the market in the summer month was down by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Show Continued Decline

Though the bureau was set to release last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its publication once the shutdown began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported recently that the business segment cut 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said earlier this month, a trend he had previously said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Increase

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still issued its price statistics for September that showed that prices are rising, although gradually. Prices increased 3% over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
