European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
