A minimum of thirteen passengers killed and 98 wounded in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and management of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.

The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We will meticulously determine the cause of this tragedy,” stated the national leader.

The president confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The president noted plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Key Undertaking of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the year before. This venture was closely associated with his administration's economic vision for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The building of both train projects was managed by the armed forces, marking a dramatic expansion of its duties in national infrastructure. They were executed at an rapid speed, defying expectations to be partially launched before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had also raised significant concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an prior crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a major opposition party called for an prompt pause in the development and management of all such projects.

This halt was suggested until the completion of a full technical review. The party stated that the loss of life "demands prompt explanations."

In response, the president maintained that the train had been running in full adherence to all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and running of these national undertakings.
